Water Clarity
Turbidity is the measure of cloudiness in the water caused by suspended particles such as phytoplankton, sediments, runoff, fertilizer, and algae growth. It is measured in Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTU). Each survey group will use samples from their survey location to find the turbidity using a fluorometer. The fluorometer will measure the NTU’s of the water and the In Vivo Chlorophyll (how much plankton is in the water).
Secchi Depth is the measure of transparency of the water. The Secchi Depth can be measured in two similar ways. One way is to use a secchi disk that is lowered in the water and the other is a secchi transparency tube. Both ways are measured in centimeters. Students use the Secchi transparency tube to survey the water clarity of Cocktown Creek.
Secchi Depth(CM) vs. Turbidity (NTU)
There is a correlation of the secchi depth (CM) and turbidity (NTU) data collected this year.
